The Order of Buddhist Contemplatives (OBC)
The Order of Buddhist Contemplatives is dedicated to the practice of the Serene Reflection Meditation tradition, known as Ts’ao-Tung Ch’an in China and Soto Zen in Japan. The Order was incorporated in 1983 by Rev. Master Jiyu-Kennett to serve as the international umbrella organization for the monasteries, priories (local temples), and meditation groups led by priests of our lineage in Britain, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States. Reverend Master Haryo Young serves as Head of the Order.

OBC Journal

The OBC Journal is published quarterly. The www.obcjournal.org site will help to keep you up to date on plans for the OBC Journal, make available archives of published articles, allow you to give feedback, and offer help if you want to know how to send in an article, how to subscribe, or other information.

Jade Mountains Buddha Hall Practice within the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives
Rev. Master Mugo White is a female disciple and Dharma Heir of the late Rev. Master Jiyu-Kennett having been ordained by her in 1981 at Shasta Abbey California. In 2000 she was named a Master. Since 1996 she served as the international OBC Lay Ministry Adviser.

OBC NORTH AMERICAN PRIORIES AND TEMPLES

Berkeley Buddhist Priory
The Berkeley Buddhist Priory is located in Albany, California. The temple offers a regular schedule of meditation, classes, Buddhist services and retreats. Reverend Master Kinrei Bassis serves as Prior.

Columbia Zen Buddhist Priory

The Priory is located in Columbia, South Carolina. Reverend Master Rokuzan Kroenke is the Prior of the temple. The temple offers an orientation to the practice and a weekly schedule of meditation, services and classes.

Eugene Buddhist Priory
The Priory, located just south of Eugene, Oregon, offers a weekly schedule of meditation, services and classes under the direction of the Prior, Reverend Master Hugh Gould.

Lions Gate Buddhist Priory
Lions Gate Buddhist Priory is located at Dragon Flower Mountain, on one hundred and sixty acres of land in the Botanie Valley, near the village of Lytton in the B.C. interior. Regular retreats are offered and visitors and guests are welcome. Lay members and friends of the Priory meet regularly in Vancouver and Lytton, B.C. Reverend Master Koten Benson is the Prior of the temple.

Pine Mountain Buddhist Temple
Pine Mountain Buddhist Temple is a Temple and retreat center located in Santa Paula, California. Reverend Master Phoebe Van Woerden is Abbess of the Temple.

Portland Buddhist Priory
The Priory is located in the south eastern section of Portland, Oregon. Daily meditation and services are offered, as well as festivals, ceremonies and monthly retreats. Reverend Master Leon Kackman is Prior.

Redding Zen Buddhist Priory
The Redding Zen Buddhist Priory is located in downtown Redding, California. The Priory offers a regular schedule of meditation and meditation instruction, classes, retreats, services and ceremonies. Rev.
Helen Cummings is the Prior.

Still Flowing Water Hermitage
Still Flowing Water Hermitage offers self-tailored retreats to those experienced in the practice of Soto Zen Buddhism, in the quiet and secluded natural setting Dutch Flat, a tiny village in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, 25 miles east of Auburn, California.  Rev. Vivian Gruenenfelder is the Temple’s resident monk.

Wallowa Buddhist Temple
The Wallowa Buddhist Temple serves as a small contemplative Buddhist Temple in Joseph, Oregon. Reverend Master Meido Tuttle is the Chief Priest of the Temple. TheTemple’s offerings are for those in the area who are interested in Buddhist meditation and practice, as well as for monks and members of the lay congregation of our Order who wish to come for individual spiritual retreats.

MEDITATION GROUPS

Bear River Meditation Group
The meditation group meets on Monday evenings at the Applegate Community Center in Applegate, CA from 7 – 9 p.m. for meditation, scripture recitation, Dharma discussions and tea. Meditation instruction is available. Monks come monthly to offer the Dharma and lead some Saturday and Sunday retreats.

Chico Serene Reflection Meditation Group
The Chico Serene Reflection Meditation Group is a fellowship of Buddhists affiliated with Shasta Abbey. The meditation group meets each Wednesday evening at 7:00 for meditation and a brief ceremony. When monks are present, there is also a Dharma talk and an opportunity for private spiritual counseling. The monks offer meditation instruction to beginners. The meditation group cordially invites newcomers and visitors to come any time to learn about the practice.
